Application engineering

Software built to be kept, not replaced.

Application engineering is the work of turning a product idea into software that runs every day without anyone thinking about it. We build custom web applications on modern React and Next.js: typed end to end, fast by default, accessible by default, and structured so the team you already have can keep shipping after we leave.

The difference between an application that scales and one that gets rewritten in eighteen months is decided in the first few weeks, in the data model, the boundaries between modules and the conventions the codebase enforces. That is where we spend our attention, before a single screen is polished.

What affects the priceEstimate your project

What it covers

Full-stack web applications

Next.js applications with server components, route handlers and typed data access, deployed on infrastructure that matches how the product is actually used.

Front-end architecture

Component systems, state and data-fetching patterns that stay legible as the surface grows. Fewer abstractions, chosen well.

APIs and integrations

REST and typed RPC layers, third-party integrations, webhooks and background jobs, documented so the next engineer does not have to reverse-engineer them.

Performance and accessibility

Core Web Vitals treated as a requirement rather than a report. Keyboard, screen reader and reduced-motion support built in from the first component.

How it runs

  1. 01

    Architecture first

A short discovery to fix the data model, the boundaries and the deployment target. This is the cheapest week of the project to change your mind in.

  2. 02

    Vertical slices

Each week ships a working, end-to-end slice of the product rather than a layer of it, so you use the software while it is being built.

  3. 03

    Handover that holds

Documentation, conventions and a codebase your own engineers can extend. We measure the handover by how rarely you need to call us afterwards.

FAQ

Questions about this work.

The things people ask about this kind of engagement before the first call.

  • Most applications are TypeScript on React and Next.js, with a Postgres database and deployment on Vercel or a cloud provider you already use. We choose the stack for the product rather than the other way round, and we will say so if something else fits better.
